Senior Counsel Appointed

    The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Honourable Chief Justice Andrew Kwok-nang Li is pleased to announce today (April 3) the appointment of two Senior Counsel of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. They are:

     Mr Barrie George John Barlow
     Mr Steven Ashley Burns

     The appointments are made by the Chief Justice under section 31A of the Legal Practitioners Ordinance.

     The appointments will take effect from the date of the Instrument of Appointment, which will be executed on May 12, 2007, when the ceremonial proceedings will be held at 10am in Court No 7 in the High Court.

     The biographical notes of the newly appointed Senior Counsel are as follows:

Mr Barrie George John Barlow

     Mr Barrie George John Barlow, aged 54, received his education in New Zealand. He was admitted to the New Zealand Bar in 1975, the England and Wales Bar in 1984 and the Hong Kong Bar also in 1984. He is engaged mainly in commercial litigation practice. He is Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has published various articles in legal journals.

Mr Steven Ashley Burns

     Mr Steven Ashley Burns, aged 58, received his legal education in the United Kingdom. He was admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales in 1972 and in Hong Kong in 1977. He was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1996. His practice is generally in the field of commercial law. He is Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and Member of the Panel of Arbitrators of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre.
