Running from tomorrow (April 4) until June 3 at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, "A Pioneer of Modern Chinese Painting: The Art of Lin Fengmian", featuring more than 100 works, provides a comprehensive review of Lin's artistic career spanning 60 years. Pictured is a work by Lin in 1987, entitled "Still Life", which is loaned by a private collection for exhibition. The Western influence is quite an evident in this painting. Works of this type first took shape when Lin was living a secluded life in Chongqing during the Sino-Japanese War. In this painting, he has used many contrasting colours: the red blooms in the vase against the fresh green of the lime in the plate; the orangey tone of the table cloth against the blue of the curtain at the back; and the eye-catching lilac flowers with yellow pistil in the vase in the middle. The layout, the composition, the geometric shapes etc. show evident influences of Cˆmzanne and the Cubists.
