Running from tomorrow (April 4) until June 3 at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, "A Pioneer of Modern Chinese Painting: The Art of Lin Fengmian", featuring more than 100 works, provides a comprehensive review of Lin's artistic career spanning 60 years. Pictured is one of the exhibits, "Lady with Fruit", a collection of Shanghai Art Museum. The facial features of Lin's ladies usually combine Western painting elements and the traditional Chinese beauty, which include long, thin brows, upwardly slanting eyes, a narrow-bridged nose, and a small mouth. But the dark skin and elongated neck of the lady in this picture remind one of the figures of Modigliani and the murals of the Dunhuang Grottoes. Lin's ladies always hold a flower in their hands, or have a vase of cut flowers nearby - the symbols of purity and grace.
