Centres stop applications for smart identity cards
**************************************************

The Hong Kong Smart Identity Card Replacement Exercise was completed yesterday (March 31) and the Smart Identity Card Centres will no longer accept applications for smart identity cards.

"People who have missed their specified call-up periods and have not replaced their old identity cards should make their applications at any of the Registration of Persons Offices starting from April 2 (Monday)," an Immigration Department spokesman said.

"The Smart Identity Card Centres will remain open to the public until May 18 for collection of the new identity cards.  People who have already applied for their identity cards at Smart Identity Card Centres are reminded to collect their new identity cards within the collection period as stated in the Notice of Collection," the spokesman said.

People who cannot have their identity cards replaced during the specified call-up periods due to their absence from Hong Kong should apply within 30 days of their return to Hong Kong.  They can book an appointment by calling the hotline 2598 0888 or visiting the ESDlife website at www.esd.gov.hk.

For further information about the arrangements after completion of the Smart Identity Card Replacement Exercise, please visit www.smartid.gov.hk or call the Immigration Department hotline 2824 6111.
