Appointment of Member to the Legal Aid Services Council

    The Government today (March 30) announced the appointment of a new member of the Legal Aid Services Council.

     The Chief Executive has appointed Dr Lee George Lam for the period from April 1, 2007 to August 31, 2008, in place of Mr Tik Chi-yuen, JP, who has resigned.

     Dr Lee George Lam is the Chairman of Monte Jade Science and Technology Association of Hong Kong. He is a part-time member of the Central Policy Unit and a member of the Small Entrepreneur Research Assistance Programme Project Assessment Panel of the Innovation and Technology Fund.

     Section 5(1) of the Legal Aid Services Council Ordinance (Cap. 489) stipulates that the council shall consist of a lay chairman, four lay members, two solicitors and two barristers, all to be appointed by the Chief Executive. The Director of Legal Aid is an ex-officio member of the council.

     The council is responsible for overseeing the administration of the legal aid services provided by the Legal Aid Department and advising the Government on legal aid policy.
