Territory-wide campaign targeting drink driving
***********************************************

Police will launch a territory-wide campaign from Sunday (April 1) to April 9 to enhance public awareness of road safety with focus on anti-drink driving.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams will invite members of the public to take voluntary breath tests and distribute publicity leaflets in bar areas to appeal to drivers not to drive after drinking. Strict enforcement action will be taken against offenders.

Police figures showed that there were 2,288 traffic accidents in the first two months of this year, a decrease of five cases compared with the same period in 2006.  Among these cases, 11 involved drink driving, a decrease of three cases compared with the same period in 2006.

"Motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol.  Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and three yearsˇ¦ imprisonment and penalised for 10 driving-offence points; or possible disqualification from driving," a Police spokesman said.
