Appointments on two vetting committees under Innovation and Technology Fund

    The Government today (December 29) announced new appointments to the Panel of Assessors for the Innovation and Technology Support Programme (ITSP) and the Vetting Committee of the General Support Programme (GSP) under the Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF) for two years from January 1, 2007.

     The Panel of Assessors for the ITSP is chaired by the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology.  Eight new members are appointed to the Panel. They are Professor Chan Chi-ming, Mr Daniel Cheng, Professor Helen Meng Mei-ling, Professor Vivian W W Yam, Dr Albert Yu, Dr Raymund Kwok, Dr Gail Kendall and Professor Lau Kei-may.
 
     "The ITSP under ITF supports midstream and downstream research and development projects undertaken mainly by universities, industry support organisations, professional bodies and trade and industry associations," a spokesman for the Innovation and Technology Commission said today.

     "The Panel of Assessors for the ITSP, comprising businessmen, technologists, academics and government officials, advises the Government on the assessment of applications for funding under ITSP, monitors the implementation of funded projects and evaluates the effectiveness of funded projects,"he said.

     On the appointments to the GSP Vetting Committee, Mr J P Lee is appointed the chairman and Mrs Agnes Mak the vice-chairman. Five new members are also appointed. They are Mrs Anna Lai, Professor Lam Kit-chun, Mr Gilbert Lau, Mr Raymond Tan and Mr Anthony K K Yeung.

     "The GSP supports projects that contribute to fostering an innovation and technology culture in Hong Kong, and those that will be beneficial to the upgrading and future development of our industries. Members of the GSP Vetting Committee are businessmen, technologists, academics and government officials. They provide expert advice on funding applications under the GSP, monitor the implementation of funded projects and evaluate the effectiveness of these funded projects," the spokesman said.

     The spokesman also thanked two outgoing members of the Panel of Assessors for the ITSP, Dr York Liao and Dr Jacqueline Lui; as well as the outgoing Chairman of the GSP Vetting Committee, the Hon Jeffrey Lam, and four outgoing members of the Committee - Mr Stanley Ko, Professor Kwong Kai-sun, Mr Lam Tai-fai and Mrs Elizabeth Li .

     "We would like to express our gratitude for their invaluable contribution to the promotion of innovation and technology development in Hong Kong as well as their wise counsel," he said.
