The Government gazetted today (September 29) the authorisation of the proposed diversion of pedestrian traffic on the walkway within Central Market and the footpath along Queen Victoria Street, under the Roads (Works, Use and Compensation) Ordinance (Chapter 370).
The proposal aims to facilitate the disposal and redevelopment of the site at which the Central Market is located for implementation of its long-term planning intention for commercial use, a Government spokesman said.
The proposal diverts the pedestrian flow of the existing walkway on the first floor of the Central Market building to a temporary footbridge to be provided by the purchaser of the site during the demolition and construction stages of the redevelopment project and to provide a new walkway within the redevelopment, the spokesman said.
