Running from tomorrow (September 30) to December 3 at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the exhibition, "Artists and Their Models - Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou, Paris", features 58 masterpieces - portrait paintings, sculptures and installations - by great artists including Picasso, Matisse, Brancusi, Soutine, Modigliani, Dubuffet, Bacon and Balthus, Adami and Martial Raysse. Pictured is one of the exhibits, "Portrait of Dedie" by Amedeo Modigliani. The melancholic motif of the tilted head, which came to be a stereotypical identity of Modigliani's style, gives a sense of cloying sweetness to this elegant figure while the mannerism is neutralised by the austerity of the simple black dress. The black colour somewhat eclipses the portrait by overpowering the sadness of the face. |
