Drug seizures at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre
*********************************************

The Correctional Services Department was committed to maintaining a drug-free environment to everyone in its custody, a spokesperson said today (September 18).

Every measure was taken by the department to prevent the smuggling of dangerous drugs into, and to eradicate any presence of them in, correctional institutions, the spokesperson said.

The comments followed the case of dangerous drugs swallowed by a remand who later discharged them in his stool.

The 32-year-old remand, surnamed Wong, was admitted to Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre last Friday (September 15) on charge of ˇ§trafficking in a dangerous drugˇ¨.

Acting on information that Wong might have swallowed some drugs, department officers put him in an isolation cell for close observation.

A total of nine packets of suspected heroin wrapped in plastic sheets were discharged in Wongˇ¦s stool on September 16, 17 and today.

Investigations by the department into whether more dangerous drugs are still concealed in Wong are continuing.

The case has been reported to the Police.

The spokesperson said the total number of seizures of dangerous drugs in 2005 was 88, with the seizures mainly in the reception centres.
