The Secretary for Security, Mr Ambrose S K Lee, visited Sha Tin District this morning (September 5) to gain a better understanding of law and order issues and environmental improvement works in the locality as well as the preparatory work for the Olympic equestrian events.
Accompanied by the Sha Tin District Officer, Mr Andrew Lai, Mr Lee visited a barbecue site in Hung Mui Kuk where the Police District Commander (Sha Tin), Mr Stephen Cheng, briefed him on the Police work in Sha Tin District, in particular the initiatives taken by the Police Tin Sam Division to improve law and order in the vicinity.
After several robberies in Hung Mui Kuk, the Administration carried out a series of follow-up actions including the installation of emergency phones, additional street lamps and location marks. The Police also stepped up patrols in the area, and conducted special operations aiming at providing the public with a safer environment for picnicking, hiking and barbecue activities.
Mr Lee went to the Sha Tin Racecourse to get first-hand information on the preparatory work by the Hong Kong Jockey Club for the 2008 Olympic equestrian events. Mr Lee also visited the Club's racing laboratory and equine hospital.
At Yuen Wo Road Sports Centre he was briefed by Environmental Protection Department staff on a Shing Mun River improvement project. Mr Lee was delighted to learn that the problem of dredged mud sediment had considerably eased and the water quality had improved upon the completion of the project in August last year.
