Thirty-eight secondary schools have participated in the fourth Inter-school Competition of Study Projects on Hong Kong’s History and Culture, contributing an insightful study on the theme of “Social Organisations and the Development of Hong Kong”.
Through the study of social organisations, associations or institutions that contributed to the development of Hong Kong, and the illustration of relationship between the organisations and the growth of Hong Kong, the projects aimed to foster students’ awareness of the local history and cultural heritage.
The competition, jointly organised by the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture, in association with the Public Records Office and the Education and Manpower Bureau, received 69 entries.
Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony at the Museum of History today (September 2), the Chief Curator of the Museum of History, Dr Joseph Ting Sun-pao, commented that the substantial information and rich content of the submissions proved that field works could enhance students’ knowledge about Hong Kong’s history and culture.
“The competition provided a comprehensive and a valuable learning opportunity for participating students. The skills they learnt - investigating, discussing, collecting and analysing data, conducting interviews, preparing reports, communicating with others, using effective languages and understanding the importance of co-operation - are all considered essential in their present role as students as well as in their future career,” Dr Ting said.
The competition was divided into two sections - Junior Division (Form 1 to Form 3) and Senior Division (Form 4 to Form 7). Entrants had to be in groups of two to 10 students, working under the guidance of one or two teachers. The submissions were mainly in a written format and could be supplemented by CD-ROMs, videos, artefacts, photo albums or cassette tapes.
The written reports were judged according to systematic use of collected material, concrete analysis of the topic, objectivity in analysis, quotation of bibliography and footnotes, usefulness of the supplementary materials, relevancy of the theme and quality of the report. The judges also considered students’ role of participation in the study.

Third Prize – “Po Leung Kuk” by Hong Kong Chinese Women's Club College
Merit Awards – “Hong Kong Chinese Martial Arts Association Limited” by The Chinese Foundation Secondary School; and “Po Leung Kuk” by Diocesan Girls' School
Senior Division
First Prize – “Sheung Shui District Rural Committee” by S.K.H Chan Young Secondary School
Second Prize – “Tsung Him School” by Wong Shiu Chi Secondary
Third Prize – “Tai Po Rural Committee” by Carmel Holy Word Secondary School
Merit Awards – “The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong” and “The Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong” by Carmel Pak U Secondary School
The Best Supplement Award – “Royal Asiatic Society” by Pui Shing Catholic Secondary School
The awarded projects will be exhibited in the lobby of the Museum of History from today until October 9.
Applications are now invited for the next round of the competition, with the theme “Exploring the Intangible Heritage: A Study of Way of Life and Folk Culture of Hong Kong People”. Posters, program leaflets and entry forms will be sent to all secondary schools in mid-September. They are also available at the Museum of History and the Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture. Completed forms and an outline of the competing projects should reach the Institute on or before December 2.
To coincide with the competition, a number of activities, including lectures and workshops will be held from October to December. All activities are conducted in Cantonese.
