Vienna Philharmonic goes live on big screen

    One of the world's most distinguished orchestras, the Vienna Philharmonic, will give two concerts at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall a decade after their last performances here.

     Tickets to the two concerts have been sold out. Music lovers who could not get tickets can still watch the shows on big screens set up at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazzas. The concerts, at 8pm on Sunday and Monday, September 24 and 25, will be telecast live to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazzas.

     Renowned Russian Valery Gergiev will conduct the orchestra to play Mozart's Overture: La Clemenza di Tito; Shostakovich's Symphony No.9 in E-flat and Brahms' Symphony No.4 in E Minor on September 24; and Mozart's Symphony No. 36 in C, 'Linz' and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5 in E Minor on September 25.

     Considered one of the finest orchestras in the world, the Vienna Philharmonic was founded in 1842. In its more than 160-year history, the orchestra has been associated with many gifted composers, conductors and musicians and won their highest commendations.

     The orchestra's list of conductors also included many prominent names such as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Claudio Abbado.

     Admission to the Cultural Centre Piazza is free on a first-come, first-served basis. People will be admitted to the piazza from 7pm. A 45-minute pre-concert documentary (in Cantonese), showing the splendid history of the orchestra and excerpts of their past performances, will be screened before the telecast.

     Concert by Vienna Philharmonic is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
