The Water Supplies Department today (August 30) awarded a $223 million contract for the replacement and rehabilitation of water mains in Hong Kong Island.
This is the first contract under stage 1 phase 2 of the territory-wide water mains replacement and rehabilitation project. The contract comprises the replacement and rehabilitation of about 66 kilometres of fresh and salt water mains ranging from 20 mm to 600 mm in diameter in Central, Sheung Wan, Sai Ying Poon, Western, Kennedy Town, Aberdeen and Wong Chuk Hang areas on Hong Kong Island.
The department is carrying out a comprehensive 15-year water mains improvement scheme to replace and rehabilitate some 3,000 kilometres of aged fresh and salt water mains throughout the territory.
It is envisaged that the whole phase 2 works will be completed in 2010, while the works for the entire 15-year comprehensive scheme will be completed by 2015.
Assistant Director of Water Supplies, Mr Ng Chi-ho, said after the signing ceremony that with the implementation of the comprehensive water mains improvement scheme, incidents of water mains burst and leakage causing inconvenience to the public were expected to be much reduced in the future.
The contract was awarded to Excel Engineering Co Ltd. Works will start tomorrow (August 31) and are scheduled for completion in 2010. The consultant for the design and supervision of the contract is Atkins China Ltd.
