Drugs and syringe found on woman remand
***************************************

The Correctional Services Department took every measure to prevent the smuggling of dangerous drugs into, and to eradicate any presence of them, in correctional institutions, a department spokesperson said today (August 25).

His comments followed the case of a remand in Tai Lam Centre for Women (TLCW) who had been found with three tablets of suspected dangerous drugs and a syringe needle with cap concealed in her body.

The spokesperson said the 33-year-old woman, surnamed Huan, was remanded in TLCW last night (August 24) on a charge of theft.

Huan was taken to the centre's reception room where she was searched by department officers for contraband materials. A syringe was found between the woman's buttocks during the search.

A needle with cap and three tablets of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped in plastic sheets were later recovered.

The case was reported to the Police for investigation.

The spokesperson said the total number of seizures of dangerous drugs in 2005 was 88, with the seizures mainly in the reception centres.
