A Hong Kong resident found in possession of three false British passports was jailed by the Magistrate's Court at Sha Tin today (August 22).
The 68-year-old male defendant, Rahman Hazrat, was convicted of one count of possession of false travel documents, namely three British passports. He was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment for the charge.
In May 2006, Rahman was intercepted by an Airport Customs & Excise officer after immigration arrival clearance. Upon searching a bag carried by Rahman, three false British passports, which bore other people's particulars and photos were found in the side of the bag. Immigration investigators then took over the case for further investigation.
Under caution, Rahman admitted he had brought the bag from London to Hong Kong. The three false British passports were found in his possession.
Forensic examination and verification with the British Consulate revealed that the passports were all bio-data page forgeries.
Under the laws of Hong Kong, anyone who possesses a false travel document commits an offence. Offenders are liable to prosecution and, upon conviction, a maximum penalty of a fine of $150,000 and 14 years' imprisonment.
