Government response to repair of gravestones in Gallant Garden caused by criminal damage
********************************************************

As regards the repair of gravestones in Gallant Garden caused by criminal damage, a Government spokesman said today (August 14):

"Those public officers who lie in Gallant Garden lost their lives in execution of their duties and deserve our respect and recognition.  This act of vandalism not only shows gross disrespect for those who died, but also adds to the loss felt by the families concerned.  To show the Government's greatest respect to those public officers, the Civil Service Bureau, together with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) and the Hospital Authority, will assist the families in having the gravestones repaired. All costs will be borne by the Government and the Hospital Authority. Departments concerned have contacted the families to make appropriate arrangements."

"In the meantime, the FEHD will take a number of measures to enhance security at Wo Hop Shek Cemetery, including the Gallant Garden."

"These include the setting up of a security guard post at the Garden and increasing manpower to conduct patrols, including night patrols."

"The FEHD will also construct fences and gates around the Garden, which will be closed at night."

"In addition, the department will discuss with the Police and the Architectural Services Department appropriate locations for installing closed-circuit television."
