A spokesman for Customs and Excise Department reminded members of the public not to bring poultry or other birds into Hong Kong illegally, or they might face prosecution.
Shortly after 3pm today (August 9), Customs officers of Lo Wu Control Point seized from an incoming passenger, who had arrived from Shenzhen, two live thrushes (hwa mei), worth about $200.
A 72-year-old local man was arrested.
The case has been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up action.
Under the Public Health (Animals and Birds) Regulations of the Public Health (Animals and Birds) Ordinance, Chapter 139, it is an offence to import into Hong Kong any bird, unless it is accompanied by a valid health certificate. The maximum penalty is a fine of $25,000.
