Successful completion of 2006 Population By-census
**************************************************

The 18-day fieldwork of the 2006 Population By-census was successfully completed today (August 1).

A spokesman for the Census and Statistics Department said public support and co-operation had enabled the successful completion of the by-census.

Over the 18-day by-census period, about 220,000 households involving 650,000 members  provided the information required for the by-census. Among these households, 5,000 provided the information by completing electronic questionnaires.

"For households that we have not been able to contact despite repeated attempts during the 18-day by-census period, our census officers will leave a questionnaire with them," the spokesman said.

Householders concerned are requested to complete and return the questionnaires in the self-addressed envelope to the department by August 16.

The 2006 Population By-census telephone enquiry centre has answered more than 60,000 public enquiries since July 6. The telephone enquiry service (tel. no. 3582 3800) will remain in operation until mid-September.

In the coming few months, the department will proceed with the data-processing work.  All data pertaining to individuals and individual households collected during the by-census operation will be treated in strict confidence and used solely for statistical purposes.  All completed questionnaires will be destroyed within a year.
