The Transport Department today (July 28) has invited tenders (Contract No. TD 48/2006) for the telecommunication services for Tuen Mun and Yuen Long Districts area traffic control (ATC) system.
A Transport Department spokesman said the works and services of the contract comprised the design, supply, installation and commissioning of telecommunication circuits, and subsequent five-year lease of the circuits. "The telecommunication circuits are for the transmission of data amongst the central computer, about 245 on-site traffic controllers and four other remote workstations for the control and operation of the ATC System. The works for the provision of telecommunication circuits are scheduled to begin in November and be completed by phases within 22 months," the spokesman said.
"The ATC system will co-ordinate traffic signal timings to minimise vehicles stoppage and delay at road junctions, resulting in a reduction of journey time and thus improving the efficiency of the road network."
"The rapid housing and new town developments in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long in recent years have resulted in a significant increase in traffic flow in both the regional and local road networks. At present, the signal system is isolated that each signalised junction works on its own. The signal timing can only be adjusted on site. The Transport Department plans to implement an ATC System there for more efficient management and monitoring of the road network," the spokesman added.
The Transport Department has appointed Delcan Arup Joint Venture to complete the design and to supervise the construction works.
