A detainee at Sha Tsui Detention Centre (STDC) jumped from the second floor of a building today (July 25) and was injured, a Correctional Services Department (CSD) spokesperson said.
Shortly after noon, when queuing up with nine detainees outside the compound next to a two-storey dormitory block 'A Hall', which is used for after-work relaxation, the detainee suddenly dashed to the second floor from an open-air staircase adjoining the building and jumped. CSD staff tried to stop him, but failed.
The detainee was immediately treated by one of the centre's Medical Officers. He was then taken to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital by helicopter of the Government Flying Service. His condition is stable.
Family members of the detainee have been informed of the incident.
The detainee, surnamed Chan and aged 21, was admitted to STDC last month (June) on a charge of wounding.
The cause of the incident was being investigated by the department.
