Tang Ancestral Hall, a monument on the Ping Shan Heritage Trail, will be closed for renovation, a spokesman for the Antiquities and Monuments Office (AMO) announced today (July 24).
The rear hall of the Tang Ancestral Hall is now closed until August 6 and the entire Ancestral Hall will be closed from August 7 to November 30.
The Tang Ancestral Hall is the main ancestral hall of the Tang clan residing in the area. It is surrounded by the three Wais and six Tsuens of Ping Shan: Sheung Cheung Wai, Kiu Tau Wai, Fui Sha Wai, Hang Tau Tsuen, Hang Mei Tsuen, Tong Fong Tsuen, San Tsuen, Hung Uk Tsuen and San Hei Tsuen. According to clan records, the Ancestral Hall was constructed by Tang Fung Shun, a fifth-generation member of the Tang clan, about 700 years ago.
The Ancestral Hall, a magnificent three-hall structure with two internal courtyards, is one of the finest examples of ancestral halls in Hong Kong. It underwent major restoration from 1990 to 1991 and is now used regularly for festivals, ceremonies and worship, and as a meeting place for the people of the clan. With the support of the Tang clan of Ping Shan, the Ancestral Hall was declared a monument on December 14, 2001.
