The exhibition, "Children's Growth and Development – The Bugs' Community", will run from July 22 to August 21 at the Exhibition Gallery of the Hong Kong Central Library (HKCL).
A major highlight of the "Summer Reading Month 2006" organised by Hong Kong Public Libraries of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the exhibition focuses on the important elements in a child's growth through reading picture books, poems, proverbs and playing challenging games.
"Summer Reading Month 2006" will feature more than 50 interactive activities including dramas, puppet shows, film shows, workshops, storytelling sessions and competitions to stimulate children's interest in reading. It runs from July 22 to August 21 at various public libraries.
With interactive games and colourful decorations, the Bugs' Community Exhibition is divided into different zones.
"Busy Bees' Kindergarten" features picture books on the virtues of patience, confidence, respect, generosity and forgiveness. "Ladybugs' Playground" shows the importance of exercise and a balanced diet for children.
"Ants' Sweet Home" will give children a grasp of how to get along with people, and how to use proper table manners and social skills. At the "Butterflies' Studio", children can explore the meaning of colours and develop a sense of aesthetics and creativity through picture books and poetry.
Parents and children can also take a break at the "Reading Boat" to share the joys of reading.
Not to be missed are the variety shows at the "Performance Stage" where harp playing, children musicals, magic and puppet shows as well as the dramatisation and creative drawing competitions will be held.
Another highlight of the "Summer Reading Month" is children's film at the Lecture Theatre of the HKCL from July 23 to August 20. Films including "Running Stripes", "Shrek", "Animation & Shorts", "Madagascar", "Quill", "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" will be screened.
Reading is closely related to a child's brain development, thinking and creativity. Ms Blanche Tang, the presenter of a radio programme on parenting, will speak on the role of reading in children's growth under the title of "Reading & Children" held on Saturday (July 22) at 3.30pm, while Ms Anna Hui, the Assistant Director of the Centre for Child Development of the Hong Kong Baptist University, will speak on creativity and children's development on August 13 at 3pm. The talks, conducted in Cantonese, will take place at the Lecture Theatre of the HKCL.
"Language Learning through Storytelling" has also been arranged at Ngau Tau Kok, Tai Po, Shek Tong Tsui and Fanling Public Libraries with Cantonese, English and Putonghua sessions.
A series of family workshops including, "Multiple Intelligence Workshops for Parents and Young Children", "How to Deliver Speeches" and "Creative Workshop for Parents and Children", will also be held at various libraries.
