Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme for Fax Machines
***************************************************

    The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) today (July 12) extended the voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme (EELS) to cover fax machines.

     The department is now inviting manufacturers, importers and local agents of fax machines to participate in this voluntary scheme on the basis of "Recognition Type" labelling system.

     To qualify for this type of label, the product should meet the energy-efficiency and performance requirements of the scheme. An energy label is to be fixed to the fax machine, informing consumers of the energy efficiency of the individual product. With this information, consumers will be able to make better choices.

     Apart from helping consumers to select products that are more energy-efficient, EELS also aims to:

(a) increase public awareness of the importance of using energy-efficient products;
(b) encourage manufacturers and product suppliers to market more energy-efficient products; and
(c) achieve savings in energy bills.

     With the inclusion of fax machines, there are now 17 types of household and office appliances covered by EELS, which was introduced in 1995.

     Enquiries about the extension of EELS can be made in writing to the Energy Efficiency Office of the EMSD at 3 Kai Shing Street, Kowloon Bay or by calling 2808 3465. Information about the EELS is also available at the EMSD homepage: http://www.emsd.gov.hk.
