In response to the Consumer Council's report today (June 15), the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department will thoroughly investigate the four models of window-type room coolers which did not meet the requirements set under the voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme.
The department has asked relevant suppliers to re-test the performance of energy efficiency of their window type room coolers.
A spokesman for the department said that if any non-compliance under the voluntary scheme was found, appropriate action would be taken, including de-registering the questioned appliance from the voluntary scheme.
The Consumer Council commissioned an independent laboratory to carry out performance tests on 15 models of window type room coolers. Four models measured by the Consumer Council were found to have a cooling capacity and energy consumption that deviated from the registered data under the voluntary scheme.
The department has been carrying out random inspections and commissioned laboratories to carry out performance tests on selected appliances to ensure the accuracy of the registered data under the voluntary scheme.
In the past two years, the number of compliance tests for room coolers has been intensified from four to 10 models each year.
