The Department of Health (DH) today (May 29) urged members of the public not to self-medicate "Qualicana", a drug containing Tiratricol, for weight reduction.
A DH spokesman said DH has instructed the manufacturer to recall the drug as they were not packed with approved package.
He said "Qualicana", a drug containing Tiratricol, is registered for the treatment of thyroid disease only.
"It can only be sold on a doctor's prescription under the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance. It has not been registered for weight reduction. Improper use may lead to harmful effects."
The spokesman said people who have self-purchased the drug for weight reduction are advised to stop using them and seek medical advice if they feel unwell.
"Members of the public should control their weight in terms of observing good dietary practice and appropriate physical activities. Before using drugs for weight reduction, they should first consult their family doctors," he added.
