Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) will organise various activities to celebrate ˇ§World Book Dayˇ¨on Sunday (April 23) and promote interest in reading. Readers borrowing library materials on ˇ§4.23 World Book Dayˇ¨will receive a free souvenir while stocks last.
The celebrating events will be launched on Saturday morning (April 22) at the Lecture Theatre of the Hong Kong Central Library (HKCL) with the prize presentation ceremony for the ˇ§4.23 World Book Day Reading Report Competition 2006ˇ¨. Winning book reports will be displayed in the Foyer on the Ground Floor of the HKCL from April 23 to 30 followed by a roving exhibition in 12 major and district libraries until July 2.
The competition, which comprises Chinese and English book report writing and bookmark design, was open to primary and secondary students. The Chinese and English book report writing competitions consist of three categories ˇV Junior Session (P.4-P.6), Intermediate Session (S.1-S.2) and Senior Session (S.3-S.4). The bookmark design competition was open to junior primary students (P.1-P.3).
More than 2,600 entries were received this year.
Three talks will be held at the Lecture Theatre of the HKCL at 11.30am, 3pm and 6.30pm. The first is the ˇ§Talk on Book Appreciation and Reviewˇ¨ hosted by columnist and culture critic Mr Shiu Ka-chun who will share his experiences of reading and book report writing with primary four to secondary four students and their teachers. Professor Chung Ling, Dean of Arts of the Hong Kong Baptist University and renowned Chinese novelist Li Rui will share their experience in Chinese writing in the talk ˇ§Public Lecture: To Express Oneself Profoundly in Chinese Ideogramˇ¨. The talk has been organised by the International Writers Workshop of the Hong Kong Baptist University and co-organised by the HKPL, to be conducted in Putonghua and Cantonese. Translation is not an easy task, but Professor Lung Ying-tai, renowned Taiwanese writer and culture critic will share her valuable experience in a Putonghua talk ˇ§ˇĄTranslation, Language and Cultureˇ¦ Distinguished Scholars Lectures Series 2006: What German Feuilleton Revealsˇ¨ jointly presented by the Hong Kong Translation Society and the HKPL.
