"Enlightening Trivialities -- Ancient Chinese Pastimes" exhibition will open tomorrow (March 22) at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and continue until June 26. Featuring 115 relics, which date back to Neolithic Age (c.7000 - c.21st c. BC) onwards up to Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911), the exhibition introduces the rich variety and historical development of Chinese entertainment culture. The picture shows a bone flute with seven holes in the Neolithic Age. Excavated in Jiahu, Wuyang County, Henan Province in 1981, the bone flute was made with the long leg bones of the red-crowned cranes. The seven holes drilled on the outside of the flute are not equally distanced, but were precisely marked and determined to ensure correct pitch. It was the earliest among such instruments discovered in the world. These flutes are well preserved, and can still be played today.
