Procession and rallies bear testimony to Hong Kong's free and open society
**********************************************************

A Government spokesman said the peaceful procession and protests held today (December 11) in relation to the Hong Kong Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization clearly demonstrated that Hong Kong is a free and open society.

The spokesman reiterated that Hong Kong respected freedom of expression and assembly, and hoped that in the days to come, gatherings and marches would also be held in a peaceful and orderly manner.

"Police and other law enforcement agencies will continue to adopt a reasonable and flexible approach in facilitating public meetings and processions so long as they are within the bounds of the law. Police also have the responsibility to ensure the smooth conduct of the conference and safeguarding public safety and order."

Today's activities caused no major traffic problems. Hennessy Road's westbound lanes were closed by Police for the afternoon's procession, and re-opened afterwards with traffic returning to normal.

The Police estimated that about 3,200 people had participated in the march today.
