The Government today (December 9) published in the Gazette notices to specify the speed limits on roads within various tunnel areas under the Road Traffic Ordinance ("RTO") (Cap.374). Section 40 of the law stipulates that speed limits on roads have to be gazetted except for speed limits of 50 km/h.
A government spokesman said that a full review on the application of the Road Traffic Ordinance to the tunnel areas was conducted earlier and it was concluded that it is necessary to publish the speed limits in those areas under the Road Traffic Ordinance in the Gazette, except for sections where speed limits are 50 km/h. This will facilitate effective enforcement.
The spokesman added that even in areas in the tunnel areas where varied speed limits had not been gazetted before, the speed limit of 50 km/h under section 40(1) the Road Traffic Ordinance still applied.
