With only two more days to go until Sunday (December 4), members of the public should not miss the chance to appreciate the beauty of over 60 bonsai exhibits in the Hong Kong Bonsai Exhibition held at the Banyan Court of Kowloon Park from 7am to 6pm daily. Admission is free.
The Hong Kong Bonsai Exhibition organised for the first time by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the territory's eight main bonsai associations, aims to promote bonsai and provide a platform for enthusiasts to share and exchange knowledge.
Bonsai has a long history originating on the Mainland. The artform can take many forms, from a big potted plant placed in the garden to a small display on a table.
Shape and spatial arrangement are essential to the art of bonsai, but the essence of the art is to reflect the beauty of nature. Plants of developed roots, short stems and small leaves with lustre are generally better choices for bonsai purposes. And flowering plants should be able to stand a long time to be appreciated.
Fukien Tea, Sageretia, Fire-thorn, Serissa, Buddhist Pine, Elm, Rhododendron and Bougainvillea are plants that are commonly used for bonsai horticulture.
The art of bonsai has evolved in different areas over its long history of development, and has a variety of styles.
Matching pots and tables are also important to complement the beauty of the plants.
The Hong Kong Bonsai Exhibition is presented by LCSD, and co-organised by the Association of Horticulture Lantau Island, Sha Tin Bonsai Association, Penjing and Artstone of Asia, Hong Kong Penjing & Artstone Society, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Bonsai International, the Yuen Yuen Institute and Ching Chung Taoist Association of Hong Kong.
