Hong Kong students learnt more about China's space program at a forum this morning (November 28) attended by the delegation of the Shenzhou- 6 Manned Space Flight Mission.

The forum, attended by more than 1,000 students and academics, was held at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and jointly organised by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Institute of Education and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

It was the start of a busy morning for members of the delegation who also visited Hong Kong Science Park and then attended a briefing at Sha Tin Racecourse on Hong Kong's preparation for holding the equestrian events for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

During the morning forum astronauts Fei Junlong and Nei Haisheng told students about the demanding training programmes and the subsequent manned space mission. The students showed a keen interest in space and their quest for knowledge about space was reflected in their questions such as asking the astronauts and the mission scientists if China would co-operate with developing countries in the exploration of space and space technology.

The students also asked if the Central Government would transfer this technology into commercial use. Another question for the two astronauts was what inspired them to devote their careers to serve as astronauts.

Later during the tour to the Yuen Yuen Research Centre for Satellite Remote Sensing at the Chinese University, members of the delegation showed keen interest in the operation of the Ground Satellite Receiving Station  - the first high resolution ground receiving station of remote sensing satellite in southern China.

Chairman of the Board of Directors, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation Mr Victor Lo explained about the park's latest development in applied science and showed the delegation all the laboratory facilities during a tour of the integrated circuit design development and support centre.

From the state of the art microchip products manufactured by Solomon Systech Limited, the visitors were able to appreciate the success in the operation of the private technological company in Hong Kong

At a visit to the Hong Kong Jockey Club at noon, the delegation watched a video about the venue for equestrian events for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Club officials explained about all the construction work to be done at Penfold Park before the Games and showed delegates a model of the venue.
