Taste of university education for prisoners
*******************************************

A total of 41 adult prisoners received certificates at Tung Tau Correctional Institution (TTCI) today (November 19) after completing a series of lectures under a continuous education scheme named "A taste of university".

The scheme is co-organised by the Correctional Services Department (CSD) and the School of Continuing and Professional Education of City University (CityU).

"A Taste of University" was launched at TTCI in early September, and was intended to stimulate participants' interest in pursuing further studies. Under the programme, 10 two-hour lectures on a variety of subjects were given by university lecturers for the prisoners. The topics included sociology, psychology, business, environmental protection, computer and social skills.

Officiating at the certificate presentation ceremony were Mr Kwok Leung-ming, Deputy Commissioner of CSD and Mr Samson Chan, Assistant Commissioner (Rehabilitation); Mr Charles Wong, Director of the School of Continuing and Professional Education of CityU; and Dr Tse Wing-ling, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Social Science of the University.

"A Taste of University" was one of the three programmes designed for the "Continuing Education for Offenders" project.

Another two items, comprising a reading programme to promote reading culture and a mentor scheme providing learning support to individual offenders will be launched soon.
