Trio jailed for counterfeit credit card offences

    Two men and a woman, aged between 28 and 30, were sentenced at the District Court today (November 18) to imprisonment ranging from 20 months to four years and four months upon conviction of offences relating to using or possessing of false instruments and other offences.

     The court heard that on June 30, 2005, two men aged 28 and 30 were intercepted by Police officers outside Shui Tsiu Lo Wai Village on Tai Tong Road in Yuen Long. Twelve counterfeit credit cards, one forged Hong Kong identity card, two Hong Kong driving licences of other people and a small quantity of dangerous drugs in the possession of the 30-year-old man were seized. After enquiries, the 28-year-old man admitted that he had earlier given the dangerous drugs to the 30-year-old man.

     Subsequent enquiries revealed that the 30-year-old man together with a 28-year-old woman were suspected in connection with a counterfeit credit card case and were under investigation by the Police. The case was finally taken over by the Commercial Crime Bureau to consolidate the whole investigation.

     Further investigation revealed that four of the seized counterfeit credit cards were used to make 13 fraudulent transactions.

     After investigation, the 30-year-old man was charged with 24 counts of using a false instrument, one count of possession of false instruments, one count each of possession of forged identity card, handling stolen goods and possession of dangerous drugs. The 28-year-old man was charged with one count of trafficking in dangerous drugs while the 28-year-old woman was charged with five counts of using a false instrument.

     The trio pleaded guilty and they were convicted of their charges. The sentences were meted out today. The 30-year-old man was sentenced to four years and four months¡¦ imprisonment while the other man and woman were sentenced to two years¡¦ and 20 months¡¦ imprisonment respectively.
