Police seize over $2.8 million worth of smuggled goods

Police seized over $2.8 million worth of suspected smuggled goods and arrested two men during an operation in the vicinity near Ap Chau last (November 3) night.

At about 9.30 pm yesterday, officers of the Marine Police Small Boat Division spotted an unlit speedboat with two men aboard passing Ap Chau at high speed.  The speedboat accelerated to flee immediately when Marine Police indicated to intercept it.

Marine Police gave a chase to the speedboat at once and intercepted it at sea off Starling Inlet near Ap Chau.  The two men were seen immediately jumped overboard.

The two men were later rescued alive from sea.

A total of 132 boxes of cargo, including computer parts, walkie-talkie radios and projectors were found on the speedboat.  The total value of the cargoes was estimated at $2.85 million.

The two men, aged 31 and 43, on board the speedboat could not produce the relevant manifest document and valid identity document.  They were both arrested for attempting to export unmanifested cargo and illegal immigration.

They are still being detained for enquiries.

The vessel was towed to the Ma Liu Shui Marine North Divisional Base for further investigations by Regional Crime Unit, Marine.
