Young architect Alvin Yip's first solo exhibition "Urban Trilogy: Architectural Plays by Alvin Yip" now showing at the Ko Shan Theatre until November 29, will also run from tomorrow (November 4) until November 29 at the Hong Kong Arts Centre.
The two-part exhibition features a narrative for the city, as depicted in Yip's three plays - "traslatio", "randstad" and "victoria". At the Ko Shan Theatre, Yip has built Hong Kong in an unfamiliar topography while at the Arts Centre, Yip invites visitors to participate in a rethinking of the urban environment.
Yip, the second artist to participate the "Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme III", is a young architect with vision. He invites visitors to build another Hong Kong ¡V experimenting with unusual city plans, making bold assumptions, and even travelling through time and space. He believes that it is a social obligation for architects, particularly of this generation, to imagine an alternative Hong Kong.
He refuses to be confined by an interest in architecture, but is keen to apply his knowledge to exploring and expressing the possibilities of urban design. During the past few years, he has practised and exhibited in the United Kingdom, Italy, Turkey and Canada.
His recent expositions, including a digital design strategy for the EU Cultural Capital in 2000, a dynamic ice model at the "Plurale" series in Rome 2004, and the game of "Flocks" for the World Architects' Congress in Istanbul this year, have provoked an in-depth dialogue among the European avant-garde set.
The Ko Shan Theatre is located at the 77 Ko Shan Road, Hunghom. It opens from 9am to 11pm daily. The Arts Centre is located at the 2 Harbour Road, Wan Chai. It opens from 10am to 6.30pm daily. Admission is free.
