************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Quality Education Fund Steering Committee:

The ninth call for Quality Education Fund (QEF) applications will begin today (November 1) and close at noon on December 31, 2005, for applications by post or in person, and at 5pm on January 6, 2006 for applications by electronic means.

"Addressing Diverse Learning Needs", "Enhancing Partnership with Schools' Stakeholders" and "Aligning Assessment with Curriculum Reform" are designated as the priority themes for this call.

Chairman of the QEF Steering Committee Mr Tai Hay-lap said that encouraging and supporting innovative projects remained the primary objective of the QEF. "Under the theme 'Addressing Diverse Learning Needs', schools may propose different modes and channels supporting students with special educational needs and students of ethnic minorities, etc," Mr Tai said.

"The other priority theme is to enhance partnership with schools' stakeholders including parents, teachers, students, other schools, tertiary institutions, professionals and the community in promoting the quality of learning and teaching and developing students' potentials."

To encourage more education research to enhance the assessment processes, the QEF will continue to collaborate with the Research Grants Council in assessing research applications by tertiary institutions.

The QEF encourages submission of applications electronically through the website (http://qef.org.hk). Enquiries on QEF applications can be directed to the hotline 2921 8833.

Established in 1998, the QEF is open to all including schools, tertiary institutions, individuals, public bodies and non-government organisations for application. Projects will be awarded a maximum of $0.5 million each, while those with exceptional merits, a maximum of $5 million each. So far, the QEF has disbursed $3,183 million in support of 5,802 projects.
