Police to step up prosecutions against driving offences
*******************************************************

Police will mount a territory-wide operation in the coming four weeks from October 30 (Sunday) to November 26 to deter motorists from undesirable driving behaviour.

ˇ§Operation 'Fossington', will be targeting various offences including speeding, dangerous or careless driving and failing to comply with traffic signals, which were major causes of traffic accidents,ˇ¨ a Police spokesman said.

The number of traffic accidents involving casualties amounted to 11 078 in the first three quarters of this year, which saw a decrease of 0.6 percent when compared with the same period last year.  These accidents were caused by following too closely to vehicle in front, vehicles losing control, driving too fast, changing lane carelessly and negligence.

ˇ§To make roads in Hong Kong safe for everyone, Police will spare no efforts in tracking down road users who have little regard for their own safety as well as that of other people, especially those engaged in illegal road racing activities,ˇ¨ the spokesman said.

"We hope that by continuing to take stringent enforcement action against offenders, we can enhance public awareness of road safety and achieve the objective of our Road Safety Vision ˇV ˇ§Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goalˇ¨, he said.
