Two men aged 50 and 52 convicted of :Managing a gambling establishment; and :Dealing with property known or believed to represent proceeds of an indictable offence; (money laundering) were each sentenced to 18 months・ imprisonment at the Kowloon City Magistrates・ Courts today (October 21).
The court heard that the officers of the Regional Crime Unit, Kowloon West conducted an undercover operation targeting the illegal gambling activities in Yung Shu Tau Park and its vicinity in Yau Ma Tei between May 2003 and January 2004.
The operation had turned overt since January 7, 2004 and a total of 97 persons were arrested in various locations and four gangs of persons operating the illegal gambling were neutralized.
Among them, 79 persons comprising 78 men and one woman aged between 18 and 70 were charged respectively with gambling related offences with court hearings starting from March 11, 2004. As a result, 77 of them were separately sentenced ranging from three months・ to 18 months・ imprisonment and fined from $1,000 to $10,000 while two others were acquitted.
The two men sentenced at Kowloon City Magistrates・ Courts today were the last two of the 79 defendants of the case.
