
HK and Japan meet in pop culture and film arenas (with

******************************************************* A two-week Hong Kong Film Festival featuring 16 movies of different era was launched today (October 17) in Tokyo, Japan, as one of the highlight events under the ˇ§Hong KongˇVJapan Year 2005ˇ¨ project.
On the first day, there was also the Hong Kong Pop Culture Symposium, where director Wong Jing, artistes Cecilia Cheung, Leo Ku and Ivan Wang from Hong Kong had a direct exchange on HK film and pop music with film critic Professor Kan Nozaki and music producer Yanagiman from Japan.
Speaking at the reception to celebrate the event, Principal Representative of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Tokyo (HKETO), Mr Alex Fong, said the ˇ§Hong Kong-Japan Year 2005ˇ¨ project co-ordinated by HKETO was aimed at providing a platform for all sectors to further stimulate the flows and exchanges between Hong Kong and Japan.
Under the "Hong KongˇVJapan Year 2005" project, there were a symposium on youth and the education roadshows last Saturday, and the Second Hong Kong Sedan Chair Race held in Yokohama yesterday.
He said the film industry was a flagship of Hong Kongˇ¦s creative industries as Hong Kong's movies and film makers had been receiving high commendations in various international film festivals.
Stressing that the Hong Kong Government was committed to building a favourable environment for the industry to flourish, Mr Fong noted that in the Policy Address delivered last week, the Chief Executive had announced plans to set up a film development board to chart a development course for the future of HKˇ¦s film industry.
Former Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Tsutomu Hata; Director General, Public Diplomacy Department, Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Masaki Okada and Minister-Counsellor, Cultural Section, Chinese Embassy in Japan, Mr Zhou Baozhi also attended the function as the officiating guests.
The opening film of the film festival was Wong Jing's production ˇ§Colour of the Truthˇ¨, which today had its premiere screening in cinema in Japan. One of the main actors of the film, Raymond Wong, also attended the event to support the promotion of Hong Kong films in Japan.
The Hong Kong Pop Culture Symposium and the Hong Kong Film Festival were jointly organised by HKETO and a Japan-based publishing organisation, Japan China Communications.
