Hong Kong and Guangdong team up to promote Greater PRD in
Canada
**********************************************************

The ¡§Hong Kong¡VGuangdong Business Forum in Canada 2005¡¨, jointly organised by the governments of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and Guangdong Province, will be held in Vancouver on October 24.

The Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Mr Donald Tsang, and the Governor of Guangdong Province, Mr Huang Huahua, will host the seminar.  It will provide the Canadian business community with a better understanding of the current economic developments in Hong Kong and Guangdong, while promoting their attractive investment opportunities.

This will be the first time that Hong Kong and Guangdong have joined forces to organise a large-scale investment promotion event in Canada.  Additional support will be provided by the governments of British Columbia and the City of Vancouver, along with the Vancouver Board of Trade and other organisations.

The forum will highlight the achievements of the regional co-operation within the Greater Pearl River Delta (PRD) - Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao - and the Pan-PRD - nine mainland provinces plus Hong Kong and Macao SARs.  Presentations and discussions will highlight the development prospects within these regions, with the aim of facilitating co-operation between Hong Kong/Guangdong and Canada.  More than 1,000 executives from Canadian companies are expected to attend the event.

The Premier of British Columbia, Mr Gordon Campbell, will open the conference, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of the People's Republic of China to Canada, Mr Lu Shumin, will speak at the forum.

Mr Tsang and Mr Huang will deliver keynote speeches. Top executives from two prominent Canadian companies will share their investment experiences in Hong Kong and Guangdong.  They are Mr Nick Leontidis, Executive Vice-president of CAE and Mr Jason Cohenour, Chief Operating Officer of Sierra Wireless.

Mr Tsang said Guangdong Province was strong in manufacturing while Hong Kong excelled at international financial connections and management expertise.  ¡§By working together, we can leverage on each other¡¦s strengths to develop the region,¡¨ he said.

¡§Last year, Hong Kong teamed up with Guangdong on an overseas promotion in London, and received an overwhelming response from local business communities and audiences.  I am confident that the coming event in Vancouver will also be a success.¡¨

In the concurrent sessions during the afternoon, a Hong Kong seminar will be held to facilitate more in-depth discussion on the investment environment in Hong Kong.  The seminar is co-organised by Invest Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in Canada and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

At the seminar, Hong Kong investment and trade experts will explore Hong Kong¡¦s advantages in accessing the China market and top Canadian companies, such as Sierra Wireless, Research in Motion and Delcan International Corporation, will speak on why they use Hong Kong as a gateway into the Mainland of China.

The Director-General of Investment Promotion at Invest Hong Kong, Mr Mike Rowse, said¡@Hong Kong was the centre of international business in Asia, with US$34 billion in foreign direct investment last year and an all-time high of 3,800 regional headquarters and offices based in the city.  ¡§The Canadian business community has always played an active role in our city,¡¨ Mr Rowse said.  ¡§We are home to more than 150 Canadian companies; many of them use Hong Kong to manage their business in the region or as a gateway to China.¡¨

¡§Through the seminar in the afternoon, we will have the opportunity to present the latest information about the business environment in Hong Kong to potential investors in Canada.  InvestHK is currently working with a number of Canadian companies on setting up or expanding their operations in Hong Kong.  We look forward to welcoming more new companies or brands from Canada to join our international hub of Asia.¡¨

The Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Toronto, Mr Bassanio So, said that the Canadian business community was excited about the seminar.

¡§With China becoming a global powerhouse and the fastest-growing economy in the world, Canadian businesses are keen to tap the market.  With our expertise and experience in dealing with the Mainland businesses, Hong Kong is well positioned to be the gateway to the China market.  We hope that by presenting the business forum, Canadian companies will better understand the enormous development potential of the Pan-PRD Region and how Hong Kong can empower them to derive and implement their China strategy,¡¨ he said.
