Enhanced sentence for street deception
**************************************

Police have successfully applied for an enhanced sentence under the Organised and Serious Crime Ordinance for a street deception case in which a 32-year-old woman was sentenced to 36 months¡¦ imprisonment at the District Court today (October 10).

The court heard that on June 3, 2005, a 52-year-old woman was approached by a woman who asked for the whereabouts of a ¡§spiritual master¡¨ on Tip King Road in Tuen Mun and two other women who claimed to know the master.

She felt suspicious after being asked to collect her cash and valuables for spiritual blessing and reported the case to the Castle Peak police station.

Responding to the report, Police officers swiftly arrived at the scene and arrested a 32-year-old female two-way permit holder.

Regional Crime Unit of New Territories North took over the investigations afterwards and the woman was believed to be connected with an active ¡§spiritual blessing gang¡¨ in the region. She was later charged with conspiracy to defraud.

She pleaded guilty on October 4 and the sentence was meted out today.
