HA Response Statement on Consultancy Study on Senior
Executive Remuneration
*****************************************************

In response to some media reports which said that "the Hospital Authority (HA) is to offer more than $7 million of annual remuneration in the recruitment of the Chief Executive (CE) post", the authority chairman, Mr Anthony Wu, clarified as follows today (September 30):

The HA has never discussed or considered offering $7 million or any specific remuneration package in the recruitment for the CE post.  The Staff Committee of the HA Board also had not formulated any concrete amount of the remuneration package and had only recommended to use the current CE's remuneration package as a reference point when considering an appropriate package.  The final recommendation would depend on the skills, knowledge and experience of the successful candidate.  Any upward or downward adjustment in the remuneration package has to be considered against the principles of financial affordability and cost effective use of public resources.

Mr Wu stressed that any recommendations on the successful candidate and the related remuneration package had to be discussed and endorsed by the HA Board.  "The final recommendation will be submitted to the Government for approval.  The HA has always been utilising available public resources in a cost-effective manner. Under the present financial situation, HA is not and will not be in a position to offer to any potential candidate such a package of '$7 million'," he said.
