Recruitment of Administrative Officers in 2005/06 starts
tomorrow
*********************************************************

The Government will start conducting a recruitment exercise tomorrow (October 1) to select a maximum of 40 candidates for appointment as Administrative Officers (AOs) on civil service terms in 2005/06.

The application period will run until October 24, 2005. Recruitment advertisements will be published in the South China Morning Post and in both the local and overseas editions of Ming Pao and Sing Tao Daily on October 1, 8 and 15, 2005 and on the Civil Service Bureau's homepage (at http://www.csb.gov.hk) from tomorrow.

The advertisement will also be accessible at the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government Information Centre on the Internet (at http://www.info.gov.hk) or ESDlife public kiosks installed in MTR and KCR stations, major shopping centres and other locations.

The recruitment is open to permanent residents of the HKSAR with at least seven years of residence in Hong Kong who possess the required degree from a university in Hong Kong (or equivalent qualifications) or those who are undergraduates taking their final degree examinations in summer 2006. Applicants may refer to the advertisement for details regarding the qualification requirements.

All AO applicants would need to obtain valid pass results in the three papers of the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) (Use of Chinese, Use of English and the Aptitude test) (formerly known as CRE Part I) before they are qualified to apply for the AO post. Applicants without the requisite result in CRE will be invited to attend the next round of CRE to be held in Hong Kong on December 3 (for candidates residing in Hong Kong).

Qualified applicants currently possessing valid pass results in respect of the three papers of the CRE, as well as those who attain such results in the coming CRE, will be invited to attend the AO Recruitment Examination (AORE) (formerly known as CRE Part II) on January 21 next year. Candidates residing or studying outside Hong Kong may take both the CRE and AORE on January 21 next year in any one of the six overseas examination centres or in Hong Kong. The AORE results will be used for short-listing applicants for selection interviews in the current recruitment exercise.

Application forms (CSB 606 and CSB 606A) (9/2005) are available at the Public Enquiry Service Centres of District Offices, Home Affairs Department and any Job Centre of the Employment Services Division, Labour Department, or can be downloaded from the Civil Service Bureau's homepage (at http://www.csb.gov.hk).

Applicants can make on-line applications directly through the Bureau's website. Each applicant should only submit one application, either by hand, by post or through online application. Duplicate applications will result in delay in processing and applicants may not get sufficient notice to be invited to attend the examination.

To help reduce the civil service establishment to around 160,000 by 2006/07, the Government has imposed a general civil service recruitment freeze with effect from April 1, 2003. Applications for exemption are considered by a panel co-chaired by the Chief Secretary for Administration and Financial Secretary and with Secretary for the Civil Service as member (the Panel). The Panel has carefully considered the application from the Administrative Service. After critically reviewing the justifications advanced and the manpower plans of the Grade, the Panel agreed that there is a strong need for the AO Grade to recruit again in 2005/06.
