******************************************************
From tomorrow (October 1), prospective applicants for civil service jobs at degree or professional level can apply to sit for the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) scheduled for December 3 (Saturday).
A spokesman for the Civil Service Bureau (CSB) said: "Passes in CRE papers are required of applicants for civil service posts at degree or professional level, and are valid for three years. People who are interested in applying for civil service posts at degree or professional level in the near future may wish to consider sitting for the coming CRE, so as to be eligible to apply for civil service openings at degree or professional level that might be available before another CRE is held next year."
The examination consists of three one-hour papers namely, Use of English, Use of Chinese and Aptitude Test, in multiple-choice format. Applicants for civil service posts at degree or professional level are required to obtain a pass in each of the two language papers in the CRE. Applicants for some of these posts are also required to pass the Aptitude Test. The CRE is held independently of the recruitment process for civil service posts and persons who wish to apply for any civil service vacancies should apply to the recruiting grades/departments direct.
Holders of degree or professional qualifications or undergraduates who will have attained a degree in 2006 may apply to sit for the coming CRE. In addition to being held in Hong Kong on December 3, the examination will also be held in several overseas cities on January 21, 2006 to facilitate the taking of the examination by Hong Kong people studying or residing overseas.
People interested in taking the coming CRE may apply through the online facilities at the CSB homepage (www.csb.gov.hk) or by using the CRE application form (CSB31 (8/2005)) which can be downloaded from the CSB homepage or collected from any of the Public Enquiry Service Centres of District Offices or Job Centres of the Labour Department from tomorrow (October 1) onwards. Applications must be made before noon on October 22 (Hong Kong time).
