"East Meets West - Cultural Relics from the Pearl River Delta Region" exhibition will run from tomorrow (September 30) until January 2, 2006 at the Hong Kong Museum of History. Featuring some 160 cultural relics from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, the exhibition attempts to introduce the roles that the three cities played in the Sino-Western exchanges over the past 2,000 years.
The picture shows a gilt vessel, a collection of the Guangdong Provincial Museum. The vessel, unearthed in Suixi County, is decorated all over with chased designs of honeysuckle, acanthus scrolls, flying phoenixes, beauties with bodies of birds and lotus. It is an example of the cultural exchange facilitated by the sea traders who sailed between China and Central Asia or Southwest Asia during the 5th and 6th centuries. |
