"East Meets West - Cultural Relics from the Pearl River Delta Region" exhibition will run from tomorrow (September 30) until January 2, 2006 at the Hong Kong Museum of History. Featuring some 160 cultural relics from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, the exhibition attempts to introduce the roles that the three cities played in Sino-Western exchanges over the past 2,000 years.
The picture shows the "String of Gold and Agate Beads" made in Early Eastern Han. A collection of the Guangzhou Museum, the artifact has a gold bead with 12 faceted filigree surfaces welded to form a lozenge shape. This type of goldsmithing technique came from Southwest Asia. This kind of gold ornaments with welded beads were found only in tombs of Eastern Han (AD25-220) in Guangahou, Changsha and Yangzhou. It is believed that they were probably imports of sea trade at that time. |
