To help local SMEs better understand the importance of intellectual property rights (IPR) in business development, the Intellectual Property Department, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) and the Federation of Hong Kong Industries' Hong Kong Coalition For Intellectual Property Rights jointly held a seminar on IPR protection today (September 28).

The theme of the seminar was "Tips on Managing IP and Handling IPR Infringement." Speakers included government officials from Hong Kong and the Mainland, intellectual property professionals and senior executives of local brand and trademark owners. Participants shared their views on the most effective ways to defend and manage intellectual property.

The Director of Intellectual Property, Mr Stephen Selby; the Deputy Executive Director of TDC, Mr Steve Alexander; and the Deputy Chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Industries and the Chairman of Hong Kong Coalition for Intellectual Property Rights, Mr Eddy Lee, jointly officiated at the opening ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Selby said the IPD had been making consistent efforts to promote IPR protection to local SMEs. "We have co-organised six seminars targeting Hong Kong SMEs in Guangdong Province, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Federation of Hong Kong Industries in the past two years.

"Seminars are an effective means to help raise the awareness of local SMEs about IPR protection. The active participation and strong support of SMEs at today¡¦s event shows that our strategy and the topics concerned satisfied their needs," he said.

Mr Alexander also welcomed the seminar taking place in Hong Kong. "With its well-developed infrastructure and legal system for the protection of intellectual property rights, Hong Kong has become known as a renowned trading platform for business-focused technologies and design services. The TDC is keen to promote protection of intellectual property rights. The upcoming Innovation and Design Expo, which will be held in this November, will pinpoint the importance of creative intellectual property," he said.

Mr Lee, said, "The Hong Kong Coalition for Intellectual Property Rights is very much impressed by the overwhelming response from various business sectors towards today's seminar. Their participation is a demonstration of the high awareness of the importance of the protection of intellectual property rights. It also reflects the initial success of the joint efforts of the coalition, industry and the Government in promoting and fostering intellectual property rights."

The morning session of the seminar focused on IPR protection and enforcement measures in Hong Kong and the Mainland, covering areas such as company name registration versus trademark registration, handling of IPR infringements in trade fairs/exhibitions and domain name dispute resolution.

The afternoon session showcased various success stories of enterprises in brand building and IP management. IP professionals also provided tips for SMEs on how to protect IP through legal proceedings, how to protect design and trademark registration, etc.
