Two employers fined for wage offences

    Cheung Fai Engineering Limited and Tarring Chemical Limited were fined $23,500 and $10,000 respectively at the Kwun Tong and Shatin Magistrates' Courts today (September 22) for wage offences under the Employment Ordinance. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

     The employer of Cheung Fai Engineering Limited failed to pay wages to four employees within seven days of the expiry of the wage period as required by the ordinance. The amount of wages involved was about $118,000. Tarring Chemical Limited failed to pay wages of about $10,000 to an employee within seven days of the expiry of the wage period and the termination of employment.

     According to Section 23 and 25 of the Employment Ordinance, wages due upon expiry of the last day of the wage period or upon termination of employment shall be paid as soon as practicable, but not later than seven days.

     Any employer who fails to do so wilfully and without reasonable excuse is liable to a maximum fine of $200,000 and imprisonment for one year.
