Customs officers of Marine Strike and Support Division of Marine Enforcement Group raided a river trade vessel in Hong Kong waters off Tap Shek Kok, Tuen Mun, on Sunday (September 18). They seized from the vessel a large quantity of unmanifested cargo, including undeveloped photographic paper, cosmetics, skin care products, dyed and finished cowhide. The total value was about $8.5 million.
The vessel, declared to be carrying groceries, was destined for the Mainland. The unmanifested goods were concealed at the far end of the container. As camouflage, the container entrance was filled up with groceries, such as flour, cream and frozen food products.
A 40-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, who was the manager of a shipping company and a freight forwarder agent respectively, were arrested. Investigations continue.
Anyone found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo under the Import and Export Ordinance is liable on conviction on indictment to a fine of $2 million and seven years' imprisonment.
